Ellis & Sandy

Kiper

Log home enthusiasts for many years, Ellis and Sandy have always been drawn to the magnificence of God’s creation in nature. So, a home that best reflects the beauty of nature just made sense! They began their quest for a new log home by searching out a log home package supplier that shared the same commitment to quality and integrity that they desired. “Honest Abe Log Homes kept rising to the top of our list in matching those criteria.”

So much so, that in 1992, Ellis decided to take his carpentry experience and background to launch a career as a custom builder of log homes, and Rocky-K Log Homes was formed.  As an independent builder/dealer for Honest Abe Log Homes, he and Sandy achieved the honor of national ‘Dealer of the Year’ in 2009.  Committed to professionalism and excellence, Ellis maintains Registered Builder status with the Lincoln Trail Home Builders Association, and is a member of KAHB and NAHB.

WHY CHOOSE A LOG HOME?

  • Green before it was cool

Log home construction uses wood from sustainable tree farms and creates a level of home efficiency (both in construction and energy use) that is unmatched with traditional “stick-built” construction.  The log home design has always benefitted from high efficiency and low environmental impact – we’re not just joining the conservation movement late in the game – we’ve been leading it since log homes were a thing.

  • It will always be home

Chances are, if you’re interested in a log home you’ve been looking at some for sale.  If that’s the case, then you probably have realized – there aren’t many to pick from.  That’s because log home owners are typically owners for life.  For most people, their log home is their perfect vacation spot and house rolled into one amazing place.  Once you’ve built your log home, it will always be just that – “home”.

  • Natural Beauty

A log home offers the perfect balance between luxury and the great outdoors. There’s something truly special about the atmosphere of a log home. Whether it’s your vacation spot or a place to call your home – it’s hard to find a more beautiful structure that fits in so seamlessly with nature.

  • Uniquely Yours

There are countless floorplans to choose from and each one can be customized to suit your wants and needs.  Also, due to the unique nature of each log’s natural appearance, no two homes will ever be the same.  Just because you’re choosing a log home, doesn’t mean you’ve got to adhere to a cookie-cutter 4 wall design.  A log home can be more than just a log home, it can be your log home.

About The Process

Get Ready

  • 01

Just as a house needs a good foundation; your project will go much smoother with some good planning. We can guide you through the steps

  • 02

One key factor to decide up front is the amount you want to invest in your new home. If you plan to obtain a loan for the project, this may involve getting pre-qualified with a lender.

  • 03

Building site – Very often the land on which your dream home will be constructed can influence the layout of the home. Another consideration of choosing a site is if there will be any additional expenses in getting utilities or a road to the site.

  • 04

Floor plan – When looking at floor plans, take into consideration your family’s lifestyle as well as your budget. Make sure the room placement is convenient for you. We have standard plans to look at, but most likely, you will not find one that fits everything you need. We can help you pull ideas together from several different floor plans. Or, if you have an idea in mind, sketch it out on a piece of paper and we can start from there! Click Here to view our floor plans.

Get Set

  • 01

With budget and floor plan in mind, you’ll want an estimated cost for the project. We’ll be glad to prepare this for you, as well as prepare any documentation for your lender that is needed.

  • 02

During this stage, we’ll help you evaluate how your floor plan will work on the site, and make any adjustments needed.

  • 03

With financing in place, blueprints are drawn and our agreement is made. Then you are ready to….

Go!

  • 01

It’s exciting day when that first scoop of dirt is moved! You are on your way to realizing your dream of living in a new log home! Whether you choose to do part of the construction yourself, or contract with us for our ‘turn-key’ service, we are here to guide you through the process.

Honest Abe Log Styles

D-Log – 8×8 or 6×8

Our 8″ x 8″ Milled-D log is planed smooth on all sides for a beautiful appearance. This log system also features an inserted corner notch and a milled drip edge. These time-tested methods of joinery ensure an air-tight seal that keeps the outside elements outside. The logs are locked together with a large, single tongue and groove and a foam gasket and wood-binding sealer are applied between each course before fastening.

Dovetail D-Log – 8×12

Three highly requested features are brought together in the 8×12 Dovetail D-Log to create a widely desired building system. This log style combines smooth interior walls with a v-groove and a D-shaped profile on the exterior, the mass and energy efficiency of an 8″ x 12″ log size and the trusted, Appalachian-style dovetail corner system. This log-on-log system incorporates a single tongue-and-groove, specialized gasket and a wood-binding sealer between each course.

Dovetail D – 6×12

Introduced as a response to popular demand, the 6″ x 12″ Dovetail D-Log is quickly becoming a favorite of those seeking a truly authentic look for a log home. The large logs are round on the outside and flat on the inside, with a single tongue and groove, foam gasket and sealer complementing an Appalachian-style Dovetail system ensuring tight corners and strong construction. These logs can also be hand-hewn for maximum aesthetic appeal.

Interlocking Round – 8×8

We are so proud of the corner design in this log system, we included it in the name. Better than a traditional saddle notch, the interlocking corners in the 8″ x 8″ round log offers a design unsurpassed in strength and “seal-ability.” The logs are locked together with a large, single tongue-and-groove. A foam gasket and sealer are applied between each course before the logs are fastened together with screws. The full round log is planed smooth on all sides, giving a Western feel to any design.

Genesis Log – 6×12

The Genesis log is a big 6″ x 12″ log that gives you that Appalachian feel but with no interior chinking. The exterior surface of the log is rough textured and has a groove at one edge that can be finished with chinking or without it as desired. The interior surface is smooth and enhances the massive feeling so characteristic in this log style. Dovetail corners complement the look and ensure a tight fit. The logs are locked together with a large single tongue and groove. A foam gasket and wood-binding sealer are applied between each course before fastening.

Genesis Log – 8×12

With a similar look and feel to our original Genesis Log, this even larger 8″ x 12″ Genesis Log system offers even more thermal mass for energy efficiency.

Original Chinked Log

Nothing offers the true feeling of rustic log home living better than our Original Chinked log system. This 6″ x 10″ log features a rough-textured exterior surface, a smooth interior surface and the traditional look of chinked log joint. This log system is constructed with a solid spline between each log course, and chinking material is applied on both the interior and exterior sides of the wall. Dovetail corners complement the look and ensure a tight fit. This log may also be hand-hewn for the authentic look of a “real” log cabin. The logs are sealed with a large single tongue and groove and fastened together.

Big Sky Round Log

Do you love the look of the large rustic lodges nestled in the majestic landscapes of the Northwest? You can have that same stately style for your new log home with the Big Sky log style. With this option, Honest Abe will cut your log home package using 10″ round timbers for the log walls, ceiling beams and rafter or roof purlins. This system is available for all our standard catalog models and any of our custom homes as well.
